Why Studying Wine Feels Like the Perfect Next Step for Wine & Magic

Over the last few years, something really special has happened during my Wine & Magic evenings.

What started as simply performing close-up magic in winery spaces slowly turned into something much more personal for me. I found myself genuinely falling in love with the world of wine… not just drinking it, but learning about it. The stories behind it. The craftsmanship. The experience people share around a table with a great bottle of wine.

Recently, I completed my Level 2 certification with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), which has allowed me to deepen my knowledge and appreciation for wine even more. My long-term goal is to continue studying toward becoming a certified sommelier because I truly enjoy the culture, education, and experience surrounding wine.

Honestly, it feels like one of the most natural additions to what I already love doing.

Wine and magic have so much in common when you think about it. Both are about creating an experience. Both are about slowing people down for a moment and making them feel something. A great glass of wine can transport you somewhere. So can a great magic moment.

What excites me most is how much deeper this allows me to connect with guests during Wine & Magic nights and private events. Now I’m not only sharing impossible moments with people, but also having conversations about wines, pairings, regions, and stories that make the evening feel even more memorable.

I’ve always wanted my events to feel personal and intimate rather than just “a performance.”

My favorite moments are still the small ones… watching strangers at a table start laughing together, seeing someone completely shocked by a trick happening inches away from them, hearing conversations open up over a glass of wine. Those are the moments that stay with people.

Studying wine feels like adding another layer to that experience. It allows me to blend two things I genuinely love into one evening that feels warm, interactive, and unforgettable.

I’m especially excited for what’s ahead this summer with upcoming private winery events around the Bay Area.

To everyone who has supported these events, shared a glass of wine with me, or let me bring magic into your evenings… thank you.

I truly appreciate you being part of this journey.

Warmly,
Douglas McCay
